Questions and answers
what is the difference between the SALT and SMC ranges of Innowater?
The main difference is in cell lifetime and control integration:
- SALT range: lifetime ~7,500 hours, external pH and ORP controls
- SMC range: lifetime ~14,000 hours (double), controls integrated in the same unit, with connection to Loxone home automation for remote management
Recommendation:
- SALT: simple and economical bet
- SMC: long term bet with integrated control and better amortization
I have an old NaturalChlor equipment, is it compatible with the current Innowater?
In 99% of the cases yes. NaturalChlor was the previous brand from the same company, and the hydraulic brackets on the older equipment are compatible with the current cells from Innowater.
If your NaturalChlor control unit broke down or you need to replace the cell, it can usually be replaced with the equivalent Innowater model without touching the machine room hydraulics.
To confirm your specific case, please contact our technical service indicating the NaturalChlor model you have and we will validate compatibility before ordering the replacement.
how much salt should be added and how often should it be replaced?
Recommended concentration: 5 g/l (5 kg of salt per 1,000 liters of water); the operating range is 4 to 6 g/l.
Practical references for initial dosage:
- 30 m³ pool: 120-180 kg
- 50 m³ pool: 250 kg
- 80 m³ pool: 320-480 kg
- 120 m³ pool: 480-720 kg
Always buy salt specifically for electrolysis (not common industrial salt), because impurities damage the cell.
After initial dosing, replenishment is minimal: a few kilos per season to compensate for losses due to filter washings, overflows and rain. Salt is not consumed in the electrolytic process: the chlorine generated is transformed back into salt in the water, in a closed cycle.
do I have to change the water a lot if I install a salt chlorinator?
No. The salt in the chlorinator does not require the pool to be emptied more than usual. The annual or biannual partial draining for maintenance is the same as in a pool with traditional chemical chlorine.
The only thing that changes:
- After a major emptying, salt must be added again to maintain the 5 g/l concentration
- If you empty 30% of the pool, you replenish 30% of the proportional salt
It is also good practice to check the concentration with a digital meter before and after an emptying.
does the salt chlorinator spoil the seals, bulbs or pool stone?
Not with a correct concentration of 4-6 g/l and a controlled pH between 7.2 and 7.6. The salinity of a pool with electrolysis is much lower than that of the sea:
- Pool with chlorinator: 0.5%
- Sea water: 3.8%
It does not significantly affect:
- Natural stones
- Well placed gresites
- Floodlights with quality stainless steel frame
- Quality gaskets
Where care does need to be taken:
- Low quality stainless steel light frames
- Highly porous stones
- Coastal areas where ambient salt enhances the effect
In chlorinator pools and coastal areas, ensure that all submerged metal components are of marine quality (AISI 316).
can I replace my 15 g/h chlorinator with a 20 g/h cell if I am short?
No. The Innowater chlorinators are electrically sized for a specific production:
- 15 g/h unit only accepts 15 g/h cell
- The 20 g/h unit only accep ts 20 g/h cell
- And so on
If you are short of production, the solution is not to change the cell for a larger one (the equipment would not feed it correctly), but to replace the entire chlorinator with a larger capacity model.
That is why it is so important to size up from the first purchase: sizing too much is expensive in the medium term. If you have doubts about the sizing before buying, contact the technical service.
do I need an automatic pH controller or not?
It is not mandatory, but highly recommended. The electrolysis process generates sodium hydroxide as a by-product and this raises the pH of the water steadily.
No automatic control:
- You have to measure manually with photometer or test strips
- Add acid every few days in the middle of the season
With automatic controller:
- SMC range: factory integrated control
- SALT range: external module(automatic pH control)
- The system doses acid when needed without intervention
In pools with salt chlorinator, automatic pH control is considered almost universal good practice. For full automation with ORP, see automatic control panels.
does the salt chlorinator work with an indoor pool or in winter?
Yes, but with two nuances.
With slatted or louvered cover:
- You must activate the cover sensor of Innowater to reduce production when it is closed
- If you do not activate it, it will overchlorinate and damage the cover sheet
In actual winterization:
- Lower production to 0%
- But keep the equipment energized so as not to lose calibration
- Salt concentration is maintained in the water without problem
Before spring reopening:
- Measure conductivity with a digital meter
- Confirm that the salt is still in range (4-6 g/l) and replenish if necessary

how do salt chlorinators work Innowater?
Salt chlorinators use a salt electrolysis process to transform the salt dissolved in the water into active chlorine (hypochlorous acid), ensuring constant and effective disinfection without the need for additional chemicals.
Phases of the Salt Electrolysis Process:
- Addition of salt: It is recommended to dose the salt in the shallowest part of the pool to facilitate its dissolution. High quality salt should be added at a concentration of 4 to 6 g/l and salt measurements should be taken every 30 days to ensure an optimum level of disinfection. It is important to remember that salt is not consumed in the chlorine production process, but is lost during filter washings, so it is necessary to replenish it periodically.
- Circulation of the saline water: It passes through the electrolytic cell of the chlorinator and performs the electrolysis of the SALT.
- Electrolysis: The purpose of the electrolysis process is to apply an electric current to the salt dissolved in water (NaCl). As a result, sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) are obtained. When chlorine comes into contact with water, it is converted into hypochlorous acid, the ideal pool disinfectant. As a negative part , sodium is the product that causes the ph to increase.
- Disinfection: This process allows the elimination of organic matter contributed by both bathers and environmental waste, ensuring optimal water quality.
- The closed salt cycle: Chlorine is transformed back into salt due to the action of ultraviolet rays, closing the disinfection cycle in a natural and efficient way. When choosing a salt chlorinator, it is important to consider whether the pool has a louvered or louvered cover, as in these cases the chlorinator should include a cover sensor to adjust chlorine production and avoid overchlorination.
Buying Guide: Which is the Best Salt Chlorinator Innowater for You?
Before choosing an innowater salt chlorinator, the first thing the customer should do is determine the power and production capacity of the equipment. Below are the recommended production capacities depending on the size of the pool:
- Up to 30 m³: A chlorinator with a production of 10-15 g/h is recommended (example: SMC10 or SALT15).
- Between 30 and 50 m³: A chlorinator with a production of 15-20 g/h is recommended (example: SMC15 or SALT20).
- Between 50 and 70 m³: A chlorinator with a production of 20 g/h is recommended (example: SMC20 or SALT20).
- Between 70 and 120 m³: A chlorinator with a production of **30 ** (example: SMC30 or SALT30) is recommended
- More than 150 m³: A chlorinator with a production higher than 50 g/h is recommended (example: SMC50 or industrial models such as SMC-M or SMC-H).
Once we have chosen the equipment by production, we have to decide between the different configuration options available. In domestic equipment, we have mainly two alternatives:
- Basic chlorinators: As the standard models of the SMC and SALT ranges. These are simple units that allow manual adjustment of chlorine production from 0 to 100%, without integration of advanced control systems.
- Advanced chlorinators: As the models of the SMC Plus and SALT Plus ranges, which include the possibility of integrating pH and ORP control. These units allow automating the adjustment of chlorine production according to water needs, improving efficiency and reducing the need for manual intervention.
ORP control is increasingly in demand, as it makes it possible to forget about manually adjusting chlorine production. This system automatically regulates the amount of disinfectant needed, providing a double advantage:
- Greater convenience, by avoiding the need for constant adjustments.
- Safety and stability, by always maintaining an optimal level of chlorine in the water, avoiding both sub-disinfection and excess of chlorine.
