Turbidimeter TUM-20

The turbidity meter displays the measurement result in the unit NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). This unit is specified in the ISO standard. NTU is identical to FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). In practice, two other units of measurement are used to measure turbidity: JTU and SiO2. JTU (Jackson Turbidity Unit) corresponds to 19 times the NTU, while Silica Unit corresponds to 7.5 times the NTU.

Measuring principles

In the turbidimeter an infrared LED works with 850 nm as light source. A photodiode positioned at an angle of 90° to the light beam receives the light reflected by the particles in the measuring solution (diffused light or nephelometric measuring method for the lower measuring range menu) For the upper measuring range, another photodiode is located opposite. (The measurement is carried out by the transmitted light method.) The meter thus determines the turbidity in NTU (FTU). Thanks to the use of an infrared LED it is possible to carry out measurements in coloured liquids, e.g. red wine.
